Aim: an imaginative design was needed to regenerate a shabby but prominent corner of the market town.

Problems: the buildings still standing were very run down. Some were listed, all were within the conservation area and the developer, Enterprise Heritage, did not wish to destroy the once-lovely structures.

Solution: the nine old houses were brought carefully back to life, and nine new units slotted between. The traditional design of the new house complements the original buildings. Maldon district council agreed – it received a commendation award for Design and Conservation.
