Although small, this cottage is a prominent building overlooking the Doctor’s Pond in Great Dunmow, Essex, so needed a very sensitive approach to design. Although prominent, some aspects of the cottage were impractical, and the owner was keen to upgrade the property. The small, flat-roofed, single-storey garage was too small to accommodate most moderately sized cars. The garage was converted into a kitchen with French doors which open onto a patio garden. The removal of the flat roof improved the appearance of the cottage, and the addition of a bedroom and en-suite bathroom under a new slate pitched roof improved the accommodation.
