Greek Orthodox Church, Westcliff‑on‑Sea – Planning Permission Secured

We are pleased to announce planning permission has been granted for a comprehensive programme of alterations and extensions to the Greek Orthodox Church in Westcliff‑on‑Sea. This approval marks an important milestone in the development of a scheme designed to respect the church’s spiritual identity while enhancing its architectural presence and functional capacity.

Project Overview

The proposals introduce a series of sensitive internal and external interventions that strengthen the liturgical and community functions of the church.

Key Proposals

Internal Enhancements

  • Creation of dedicated sanctuaries for each of the saints to whom the church is consecrated, ensuring appropriate liturgical representation.
  • Adaptation of the existing bell tower to incorporate a new baptistery. This includes reducing the tower’s height and transitioning its form from a square base to an octagon at first‑floor level.
  • Installation of a newly designed octagonal baptism font, positioned to take advantage of natural light from the large windows above.

External and Structural Additions

  • Construction of a new bell tower designed to more closely reflect the symbolism and architectural traditions of the Greek Orthodox faith.
  • Introduction of new first‑floor seating areas, providing increased capacity for liturgical gatherings.
  • Replacement of the existing kitchen wing with a new hall along the western side of the church, offering improved accommodation for community events.

Architectural Approach

The revised external language adopts a traditional Romanesque style, expressed through repeated sequences of arches, stone detailing, and lattice windows and doors. This approach is intended to reinforce the symbolic and cultural identity of the Greek Orthodox faith while providing a unified architectural character across both the existing church and the new hall.
