Completed in summer 2024, this scheme delivers three detached family homes on a site close to the market town of Saffron Walden, Essex, replacing a large sprawling bungalow and swimming pool. The architectural approach was to create a contemporary interpretation of the local village vernacular—careful in scale and proportion, and grounded in a restrained material palette. Elevations combine render with horizontal timber boarding and red facing brickwork, unified by traditional steeply pitched plain-tile roofs. Open oak porches—each designed with its own character—mark the entrances, add depth to the façades and provide practical shelter.
As a practice, we particularly value the continuity from early design thinking to construction, and it has been a real pleasure to see the original hand-drawn concept sketches translated so successfully into the finished build. If you’re considering a new-build home, infill development or a sensitive redevelopment, please contact Ian Abrams Architect Ltd to discuss your brief and how we can help from concept to completion.
